6 Reasons Why You Should Add Beetroot To Your Diet

Beetroot is a food that dates back to prehistoric times and has been used by many ancient cultures as medicine.

Beetroot grew naturally along coastlines in North Africa, Asia, and Europe and its green roots were known for their medicinal healing properties. It wasn’t until the 19th Century that the red beets were consumed and its rich sweet taste was appreciated. Nowadays beetroot is one of the healthiest vegetables to consume, either as the beets itself or as part of a juice.

Here are 6 reasons why you should consume beetroot as part of your diet.

1) Lower Your Blood Pressure

Drinking beet juice can help lower your blood pressure. A medical study showed that drinking just one glass of beet juice lowered systolic blood pressure by an average of 4-5 points. Beets are full of nitrates, which when consumed are converted into nitric oxide in your body. Nitric oxide helps to relax and dilate your blood vessels, which results in improved blood flow round your body and a lowering of your blood pressure

2) Beets are rich in Valuable Nutrients and Fibre

Beets are part of the same family of vegetables as spinach and chard and as such contain many great vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are full of vitamin C (which helps boost your immune system) as well as minerals like potassium (essential for healthy nerve and muscle functions) and manganese (which is excellent for healthy bones, liver, kidneys and pancreas).

3) Beets are full of anti cancer properties.

The natural chemical found in beets, known as phytonutrients, which give the plant its deep red colour may be able to keep cancer at bay. Medical research has shown that animals with cancer that consumed beetroot extract greatly reduced multi-organ tumor formations. Beetroot extract is being further studied for use in treating pancreatic, breast and prostate cancers. It is thought that the combination of antioxidant and anti inflammatory effects in beets helps reduce the cancer risk.

4) Beets Detox Your Liver

The nutrients contained in beets have been shown to aid in the body’s detoxification process. Beets are full of antioxidants which help the body get rid of waste and toxins and also strengthening your immune system. The amino acid betaine contained in beets helps the liver eliminate toxins, the pectin in beets clears the toxins that have been removed from the liver so they don’t make their way back into the body, and beets have high anti-inflammatory properties to encourage detoxification.

5) Beets help with digestion

Beets are high are fibre and fibre helps to promote digestive and colon health by cleaning out the gastrointestinal system making results in regular, healthy bowel movements.

6. Beets Fight Inflammation

Inflammation in the body is often the starting point for many illnesses and chronic diseases. Beets are rich in the nutrient betaine which protects cells, proteins and enzymes from environmental stress and as such internal organs are protected. Betaine is shown to decrease the risk of inflammation.

Beets provide some impressive health benefits. They are low in calories and a great source of nutrients, including fiber, folate and vitamin C. And to top it off they are delicious and versatile, fitting well into a healthy and balanced diet.
