Eco-Activist Creates Super-Sustainable Clothing Made From Tents Abandoned At Music Festivals

An eco-warrior entrepreneur from Scotland is creating cloths from discarded tents left at music festivals. His latest line debuted on the London Fashion Week catwalk and wowed spectators and other fashion designers alike.

James Marshall, 24 years old, spent the summer of last year collecting as many abandoned tents as he could following the Kendal Calling festival in the Lake District and the Eden Festival in the Scottish Borders.

He managed to take home around 300 tents which fashion designer Imogen Evans then turned into trendy jackets, bucket hats and bumbags / fanny packs.

“We also worked with a charity in England who collect tents at the end of festivals and give them to refugees,” said Marshall. “They don’t normally collect broken tents, but they did and then sent them all over to us.”

Their super-sustainable jacket was modeled on the London Fashion Week in February, under the brand name 10T.

According to Marshall, London Fashion Week was a great experience although pretty stressful leading up to it. He was over the moon with the recognition and found it “nice to have the validation that the process and idea works and that we can take the idea to market and continue with it.”

The idea for the 10T project came to Marshall shortly after he got his degree in Environmental Sustainability from Edinburgh Napier University in 2018.

He is hoping to start selling his products online this month before the festival season kicks off.

The plan for now is to continue collecting materials from sources themselves, but they will also look at including other forms of waste.

“What I want to hold on to is that we collect, manifest, sort, and clean the materials and make the products ourselves.”
