In an amazing act of friendliness and awareness, a beluga whale returned a mobile phone to it’s owner who had accidentally dropped it in the sea.
The astonishing moment took place in Hammerfest, Norway, and was caught on video for all to see.
When the whale was first spotted in these waters, it had a harness of some sort fitted to it. Norway officials believe that the whale may have been undergoing training to be a spy whale for the Russian Navy, and went rogue.
The harness was eventually removed from the whale, but the whale continued to hang out in the area in which is was first spotted.
When it became known to locals, some would head down to the waterfront to see if they could catch a glimpse of the whale.
Ina Mansika and her friends went down to the spot to see if they could see the ex-Russian spy whale, and they got more than they had bargained for. Not only was the whale there to greet them, but it also tried to save the day when her phone ended up in the water.
Mansika told The Dodo:
“We laid down on the dock to look at it and hopefully get the chance to pat it. I had forgotten to close my jacket pocket and my phone fell in the ocean. We assumed it would be gone forever, until the whale dove back down and came back a few moments later with my phone in its mouth!”
The phone obviously suffered extreme water damage and no longer works, but that seems like a fair enough price to pay for a moment like this with a whale, and for it to be caught on video.

It’s possible that this young whale may not be capable of thriving in the wild on it’s own, given his apparent training, so a plan is being considered to have him relocated to a sanctuary in Iceland.
