Barbie dolls have taken a new turn, making wellness and mindfulness a priority in kids’ lives.
Being a kid isn’t easy, but it might get a little easier with this new Barbie doll. At least, we hope it will be a bit easier considering how many children are going through stressful life experiences. According to the American Psychological Association, stress levels among kids and teens rival those of their elders.
With over 4.4 million children in the United States having been diagnosed with anxiety, and 1.9 million with depression, maybe paying attention to our children’s mental health is something we should start doing earlier on.
And maybe the toys they play with should also be a part of their wellness routine.
Earlier this year, in partnership with the meditation app Headspace, Mattel debuted Barbie Wellness with the goal of introducing children to self-care practices worth sticking with well into adulthood.
Barbie Wellness launches with seven dolls—ranging in price from $15 to $30—designed to depict self-care activities most would relate to insta-wellness, like spas, bubble baths, and manicure treatments. Even though genuine self care can be anything that makes you feel like you’ve dedicated time to yourself in a positive way, this is still a good start.
Mattel, the owners of the Barbie line said, “Barbie recognizes the spike in emotional well-being practices among [children] and knows that the focus on personal well-being is a movement that is here to stay.”
The new line of Wellness Dolls from Barbie is teaming up with meditation app Headspace, where kids “can access a curated playlist of kid-friendly mindfulness and meditation sessions that complement the emotions available through Breathe with Me Barbie.” It included a list of tips for parents, including eight steps to introduce kids to mindfulness, meditation, gratitude practice, and to “encourage feeling emotions.”
From the Breathe with Me, Barbie website: “This meditation-themed doll celebrates one of her favorite ways to recharge using lights and sound — mindfulness meditation. The set comes with a Barbie doll, a puppy and four cloud emojis. Kids simply press the button in Barbie doll’s necklace to activate one of five guided meditation exercises that use light and sound effects to inspire their own practice. Her puppy helps her visualize — insert one of the cloud emojis into its head to represent a meditative thought bubble, then switch it up for new meditation inspiration.”
