Some places are so beautiful and surreal that when you first glance at photos of them you could be convinced they were part of a movie set.
One such place is the tiny little town of Giethoorn in northern Holland which looks like it was created for the setting of a fantasy movie. It has an enchanting, magical feel to it with it’s many canals connecting the neighborhood instead of concrete roads.
It has a population of only 2,600 and remains fairly quiet all year round without much tourism. It certainly looks peaceful, and the type of place that we’d imagine would be very relaxing to spend some time.
The official website for the town says that “the loudest sound you can normally hear is the quacking of a duck or the noise made by other birds.” The postman delivers mail to the town via a punt (a small flat bottomed boat) making his way from house to house down the winding canals.
If you are ever visiting Holland it’s easy enough to get here by car from Amsterdam and has a range of interesting B&Bs to choose from, so it’s worth bearing in mind if you find yourself travelling Europe.
I, for one, will definitely be adding this place to my bucket list!
