The Valais Blacknose sheep is a breed of domestic sheep originating in the Valais region of Switzerland. They typically spend half of the year in the mountains and then come down into the valleys for the winter months.
According to historical Swiss documents, this species know as the Walliser Schwarznasenschaf dates back to the 15th century, with some experts believing that the breed was established as far back as 5000 BC.
The breed nearly faced extinction on a couple of occasions; the first time was due to disease, and the second time due to the government trying to convince farmers to crossbreed to produce better meat.
They are well known for their unique looks and friendly temperament, and they love to interact with humans making them excellent pets.
There has recently been an increase in demand for these from the US, and they are the fastest growing sheep breed in the U.K, according to Britain’s Valais Blacknose Sheep Society.
